Every now and then, one comes across a natural color that seems unnatural. I grew up with the impression that icebergs were white. Not so, these, or any of the ones I saw in Argentina. I’ve heard the more pressure the ice is under the deeper the blue.
On Lago Argentino at the base of the Andes, there are three large glaciers that come into the lake, Perito Moreno, Uppsala, and Speggazini. When I was there, we could get to the first two. The channel to Speggazini was blocked by too much ice.
This has become a tourist destination in Argentina. In the five years prior to my visit, the town tripled in size. It’s a good taking off point for great mountain hikes, glaciers, and I’m sure other things too.
Driving from El Calafate to Parque Nacional Glaciares. Hard to imagine that there’s a glacier not that far way. This is in Argentina, btw.
